A recipe for peace of mind: soap making and emotional relief at Mother's Home

The pace of modern life, especially the daily demands of motherhood under constant stress, calls for intentional ways to recharge emotionally. A recent event at Mother's Home combined a little chemical magic, creativity, new knowledge, and emotional relief. The center's residents, their children, and our team took part in a soap-making workshop.

The workshop was led by @lb_larysa and @levytska.77, who gave participants a chance to devote several hours to themselves, creativity, and friendly conversation.

From a transparent base to a work of art

Soap making combines science with complete creative freedom. Participants learned the basics of decorative soap making and how to work with a prepared soap base.

The process involved several stages:

  • Preparing the base. The soap base was cut up and melted while participants monitored its temperature and consistency.
  • Working with color. The mothers combined shades and experimented with pigments to create harmonious compositions.
  • Creating scents. Fragrances gave every piece an individual character.
  • Using molds. The prepared mixture was poured into special molds to create flowers, animal figures, and decorative compositions.

The result was a collection of delicate flowers and playful animal figures that brought smiles to the children and a sense of pride to their mothers.

More than a hobby: how soap making helps with stress

From a psychological perspective, activities like this have a deeper effect than may be apparent.

Fine motor skills and concentration. Working with small details, choosing colors, and carefully filling molds naturally focuses attention on the present task. This helps a person step away from distressing thoughts, slow down, and remain in the here and now.

The emotional influence of scent. Fragrances can awaken pleasant associations, memories, and emotions, creating comfort, calm, and safety. Each participant chose scents she personally enjoyed.

Restoring a sense of capability. In difficult circumstances, people often focus on problems that cannot be solved immediately. Soap making changes that focus: a mother selects colors, a fragrance, and a shape, and soon holds a finished object she created with her own hands.

Social connection and support. While children watched the process with interest, adults talked informally, exchanged ideas, and supported one another. These moments build a sense of community.

“It was interesting, creative, and truly engaging. The mothers left with handmade creations, a good mood, new experiences, and warm memories of time dedicated to creativity and conversation.” — the center's team

We sincerely thank @lb_larysa and @levytska.77 for leading the workshop, showing such care and attention to our residents, and giving them a day filled with creativity, warmth, and inspiration.
